Hazard identification in chemical supply chains: The development of a novel taxonomy

An unforeseen event is a threat that can interrupt the operational process and has negative impacts on a supply chain system. To reduce the risks and improve the service level, hazard identification is one of the significant procedures in supply chain risk management (SCRM) to recognize the causes of undesired events across the supply chain network. However, the most SCRM studies in the chemical industry are spread across multiple disciplines and concentrated on various risks. This paper describes systematic hazard identification to comprehensively capture and verify the risk factors in the chemical supply chain (CSC). Through combining the distinct features of CSCs and the risks addressed in general supply chains, a risk taxonomic diagram is developed to decompose the unstructured risks into different categorizations from different supply, operational, demand, security, political, policy, macroeconomic and natural environment perspectives. It not only provides a portfolio of risks but also suggests the concerned hazardous events from industrial perspectives. It therefore provides a useful insight for risk mitigation in future.
