Effect of laminate parameters on penetration of graphite/epoxy composites

Abstract The effect of deformation rate on the penetration of graphite/epoxy, quasi-isotropic, laminates with different thicknesses and stacking sequences is investigated. High-rate experiments are performed using a punch shear version of the split Hopkinson Bar. Quasi-static experiments, using the same punch-die configuration, are performed using a hydraulic test machine. Comparisons are made based on the measured load vs displacement response, in addition to micrographs of the punched specimens. Results indicate that stacking sequence has a slight effect on the load vs displacement response, but the effect of specimen thickness and loading rate are quite significant.
