Proposal and Demonstration of Free-Space Optical Communication Using Lens-Free Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Laser

We propose free-space optical (FSO) communication using a lens-free photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL). We demonstrate PCSEL-based watt-class FSO communication by transmitting an 864-MHz 64QAM OFDM signal for the first time. This demonstration shows the feasibility of a high-power, compact, and lens-free FSO transmitter. © 2022 The Author(s)
