ON THE CONDENSATION OF AN INJECTED VAPOR BUBBLE IN A SUBCOOLED LIQUID STREAM

Abstract The condensation of a saturated water vapor bubble injected into a subcooled water stream is investigated. Experimental data were obtained for small subcool values (1-5°C) and for subatmospheric conditions. Instantaneous bubble radii were obtained by high-speed photography. A theoretical solution based upon an integral approach to the governing conservation equations is presented. Numerical solutions for several cases are given and comparison with experimental data shows satisfactory agreement. It was found that the thermal boundary layer comprises the dominant constraint to heat transfer, and that the value of the accommodation coefficient does not affect the solution.
