The paper describes GIS-T as interconnected systems of hardware, software, data, people, organizations, and institutional arrangements for collecting, storing, analyzing, and disseminating information about areas of the earth that are used for, influenced by, or affected by transportation activity. While many trends, directions, and influences will be shaping the next generation of GIS-T, the paper identifies some of the primary themes that will likely shape GIS-T in the new millennium, such as: The evolution of GIS-T products, services, and technologies, guided primarily by general technology and market forces; the application and use of these products in the public sector, guided primarily by political and institutional trends; and, emerging data and information issues that affect those who build or use GIS-T.
