The product cycle and the spatial decentralization of American Manufacturing

Norton R. D. and Rees J. (1979) The product cycle and the spatial decentralization of American manufacturing, Reg. Studies 13, 141–151. The relative and absolute decline of the American Manufacturing Belt is examined as a core-periphery realignment process. The decentralization of production is related conceptually to the product cycle model and tested empirically using shift-share analysis. The spread of innovative capacity and rapid growth industries to the states of the American South and West is seen as a reversal in traditional regional roles.
