The objective of this study was to investigate performance characteristics of hybrid cooling system with rotary type electric controlled compressor in a commercial vehicle. Tested hybrid cooling system had additionally the electric compressor besides present mechanical compressor to use selectively according to operating conditions. Applied electric compressor is rotary type and has 20.8 cc displacement. In order to analyze performance characteristics of hybrid cooling system with respect to cooling capacity and COP(Coefficient of Performance), other components including two different types of compressors were installed and tested under various operating conditions such as compressor speed and air flow rate of the evaporator. When the mechanical compressor was operated, while cooling capacity was higher than the electric controlled compressor, COP was lower due to larger displacement and higher power consumption. Therefore, to decrease cabin temperature quickly, mechanical compressor is operated at first and then to maintain under the required temperature, electric controlled compressor might be operated. Consequently, fuel consumption will be reduced because of efficient operation to control heat load of the cabin.
