Laboratory realization of a Static VAr compensator

In a low voltage distribution network, wisely applied local reactive power generation can improve voltage profiles and reduce loses related with the energy transmission. This paper deals with the laboratory realization of a Static VAr compensator (STATCOM) suitable for adjustable local reactive power generation. In the case study, the basic design of a 10 kVA STATCOM is presented. The paper contains description of the discussed system, design of the LCL output filter, and determination of gains for the Voltage oriented control with PI controllers (VOC-PI). The comparison of measured and calculated responses shows a good agreement. The results presented in the paper show acceptable dynamic responses satisfactory power efficiency of the laboratory STATCOM realization.
