A start for stops

The University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil is the site of test slabs constructed of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) for use at bus stops, in an effort to improve pavement performance. In the past, pavement solutions mostly consisted of overlaying the existing asphalt pavement or replacing the old pavement with a new plain jointed concrete pavement (PJCP). But it was found that the pavement needed extensive maintenance after only 10 years, so the during the winter of 2010 the first CRCP in Brazil was built at the USP, initially intended to verify, for tropical conditions, the occurrence of transverse cracks and compare them to other crack patterns in other climates. Results of monitoring of the pavement are presented along with questions as to their appropriate use in bus corridors in the coming years.
