Performance Analysis of a Slotted WDM Manhattan Street Network in the Presence of Physical Limitations

In this paper, the performance degradation in a WDM system due to contention among wavelengths and due to physical nonlinear effects are discussed. Both effects were combined to produce the total end-to-end packet loss rate in a network. The studied network is a time-slotted Manhattan Street Network consisting of nine nodes. The results show that in the case of few wavelengths in the network, the packet loss due to fiber nonlinear effects can be ignored in front of packet loss due to contention among packets. However, if the number of wavelengths in the network is high, the physical nonlinear effects have to be considered.
