Potential use of matrix converters in marine propulsion applications

The matrix converter is a novel high performance variable speed drive that has the potential to supersede the current generation of pulse-width-modulated, cycloconverter and auto-synchronous drives. An all- silicon solution is possible leading to high power densities with direct AC-AC conversion and bi-directional power flow. High speed switching allows the generation of good quality waveforms minimising the need for expensive harmonic filters and input displacement factor control allows for minimum impact on electrical generator design. This paper describes the matrix converter, discusses theoretical issues, compares and contrasts the matrix converter against other drive systems and explains the construction and performance of a laboratory 10kW matrix converter. The laboratory matrix converter has been used to drive a small induction motor directly connected to a DC motor loaded so replicating a scaled marine electrical propulsion system.
