CD-ROM Shear Strengthening of Masonry Walls with FRP Composites

Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are prone to failure when subjected to out-of-plane and in-plane loads caused by wind or earthquake. Recent earthquakes have shown that the development of effective and affordable strategies for strengthening of masonry is an urgent need. In this context, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials offer viable solutions to solve or lessen the effects of overloading. This paper presents an experimental program dealing with the shear behavior of URM concrete panels strengthened with FRP systems. The results of an experimental program conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla have demonstrated the effectiveness of FRP to improve the structural performance of URM walls. FRP systems consisting of bars and laminates, and different strengthening configurations were investigated.
