On Large-Eddy Simulation of Compressible Flows

This paper provides a brief retrospective view of largeeddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows with particular reference to compressible flows. It describes the formalism of filters in the context of LES as well as the various filters which are in vogue. It reviews the selfconsistency conditions for LES and the extent to which they are satisfied in practice. Subgrid-scale model validation strategies are discussed. The potential of the eddydamped quasi-normal Markovian theory is examined for possible comparison with large-eddy simulations at high values of the Reynolds number. The relation between LES and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solutions is discussed and a strategy to meld the two approaches is presented.
