Multiple-symbol-detection-based noncoherent receivers for impulse-radio ultra-wideband

Multiple-symbol detection (MSD) is a powerful technique to improve the power efficiency of noncoherent receivers. In this paper, we derive the MSD metric for impulse-radio ultrawideband for the general case of biorthogonal pulse-position modulation (bPPM) and relate it to its special cases BPSK and PPM. This unified treatment allows us to conduct a comparison of MSD of amplitudeand pulse-position-based impulse-radio signaling schemes in terms of power and spectral efficiency, as well as in terms of complexity.
