A low profile surface wave antenna equivalent to a vertical monopole antenna

This paper presents a novel surface wave antenna that can radiate vertical monopole type patterns with a low profile configuration. A horizontal dipole resides near a patch loaded grounded slab and it successfully transfers the energy from the feeding probe to the surface waves. The propagation and diffraction of surface waves generate monopole type radiation patterns. The advantage of the surface wave antenna is the attractive height: only 0.02 /spl lambda/ above the artificial ground plane, which is less than 10% of a typical vertical monopole.
