Characterization of Interfering Signal in S Band of IRNSS

Over a past few decades, Global Positioning System (GPS) is the best option for positioning, tracking, location, and timing applications to the people all over the world. As the GPS is the US-based navigation system, so taking account of Indians, usage of GPS is having so many limitations, importantly in availability, selectivity, and also for accuracy in hostile situations. To overthrow all these limitations, India has launched its own navigation system—Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). It is an independent navigation system developed by ISRO. IRNSS uses L5 and S bands for its signal transmission. The extremely low power level of the signal at the user’s receiver due to traveling long distance makes it prone to many ground-based Radio Frequency (RF) systems. This paper tried to detect the existence of such complex interference, i.e., Continuous Wave (CW), Chirp, and Pulse in S band using their Automatic Gain Control (AGC) value and Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of received signal. The p-value calculated from chi-square Goodness of fit (Gof) is used to characterize the interference which helps in applying proper mitigation techniques.
