The thermal degradation of acrylonitri-lebutadiene-styrene terploymer grafted with methacrylic acid

Abstract Grafting of methacrylic acid, and especially the conversion of the acid to the sodium salt, has a significant effect on the degradation of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) terpolymer. The amount of non-volatile residue obtained at 800 °C is greatly increased after grafting. Cone calorimetry indicates significant improvement in all parameters. It has been determined by TGA-FTIR that the degradation of all portions of the terpolymer commences at higher temperatures than unmodified ABS, due to the effect of the char layer formed on the surface of the terpolymer.
