Interactions between wakes and boundary-layers

Abstract The main interaction considered in this review is that between the wake from the leading edge slat and the boundary-layer on the upper surface of the main element of a multi-element aerofoil. Existing experimental results are used to establish the main physical features of this interaction and it is shown that these features can be predicted with sufficient accuracy using simple extensions to standard algebraic stress models for the turbulence. Wake/boundary-layer interactions also occur in turbomachinery and here the main effect of the interaction is on transition. A promising start has been made to the study of the transition process but much further work is needed.
