Nominal and Interacting Groups as Bayesian Information Processors

Nominal groups behave more like Bayesian information-processors than interacting groups. Six nominal and six interacting groups of four managers each were given a probabilistic inferential task using the Phillips and Edwards' experimental procedure. The mean nominal group response for the problem (.667) was substantially closer to the Bayesian posterior probability (.81) than was the mean interacting group response (.498).
