A simple methodfortherepresentative sampling of lungs ofdiverse size1

Theproportion ofnon-parenchyma (non-gas exchanging tissue) varies withpostnatal ageandwiththedistance fromthehilumofthelung. We havesampled 11 lungs varying in volume from24-7mlto1308mlandfoundthatthemid-sagittal slice, oracombination of thetwocentral slices inalungproducing fourslices, adequately represents theamountof non-parenchyma andofairinbronchi andbronchioles intheentire lung.
