An Enhanced Voting Algorithm for Hybrid Jamming attacks in VANET

DSRC Safety Applications, as part of Intelligent Transportation Systems, are an effective means to reduce road accidents. These applications rely on connected vehicle technologies using wireless communication and thus inherit their security problems. Reliability of safety applications is paramount. Voting-based approaches have been proposed to increase reliability. This research addresses safety application reliability in the presence of jamming, specifically hybrid jamming, which is an unavoidable attack on such technologies. The impact of hybrid jamming on voting-based approaches is investigated, and an Enhanced Voting-based Algorithm is presented, capable of overcoming deficiencies of previous algorithms under this jammer model. Field experiments using commercially available equipment were conducted to measure the performance of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that the new algorithm is superior in terms of time required to make decisions and reliability compared to previous work reported in the literature.
