WHEEL ROUGHNESS AND RAILWAY ROLLING NOISE - THE INFLUENCE OF BRAKING SYSTEMS AND MILEAGE

Wheel/rail rolling noise is one of the most important sources of railway noise. Models with which rolling noise can be predicted have been developed in previous research, enabling noise optimization of wheel and track design. As part of a larger research program on reduction of railway noise, TNO Institute of Applied Physics and Netherlands Railways (NS) Research carried out a study on the influence of braking systems and mileage on wheel roughness and railway rolling noise. This article describes the first study, in which a survey of wheel roughness was made on NS rolling stock.
