Chapter 6 – Electronic Waste

All electronic and electrical items, on completion of their useful lives, are quickly discarded and hence the quantity of electronic waste (e-waste) has been growing manyfold since the 1990s. In this chapter, the average life of electronic goods/average life cycle/obsolescence rate are discussed. Classification, categories of e-waste, and their composition and characteristics are given. The hazardous substances present there and their occurrences and impact on the environment and human health are discussed. Useful substances and elements in e-waste and their applications are presented. The rapid growth and change in modules of computers, cell phones, and consumer electronics enhances the amount of e-waste generation in the near future. Evolution of e-waste management and its organization are mentioned. Technologies for e-waste management and recycling are explained with a case study. The legal provision in India for management and handling of e-wastes is pointed out.
