Pattern Recognition in Biological Signals

Biological signals cover a wide range of frequencies, from almost zero, e.g. the signals representing the changes in the menstrual cycle, up to several kHz, e.g. from the electromyogram (see Table 1). In this contribution we will discuss some statistical and other operations on biological signals, especially on the ECG, not only because the latter signal is representive for a time-varying biological phenomenon, but also since the efforts made and the results obtained in electrocardiography are very illustrative for the methods applied to biological signals in general.
