Effect of glycerin/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) weight ratio on the synthesis of a high purity and nano plated boron carbide powder

A single-phase boron carbide with a nano plated morphology was synthesized by a solid-solid-liquid reaction (SSLR) of poly (vinyl alcohol)-boric acid-glycerin. The reaction was conducted through the mixing of the starting materials and heating at (200–250) °C in air inside a furnace. The formed precursor was heated at 250 °C for 120 min, and directly pyrolyzed at (500–750) °C for 120 min in air to prepare a preceramic precursor. The final product was obtained by the heat treatment of the preceramic precursor at 1475 °C for 120 min in the flow of Ar. The effect of glycerin/PVA weight ratio on the synthesis of a high-purity boron carbide was investigated. Compared to previous reports, nano particle boron carbide (75 nm) was produced using glycerin.
