Abstract The method of heat sources is used for analytical calculations of the temperature field and heat flows due to sliding friction in the process of metal cutting. The deformation of metal on the shear plane and cooling by liquid lubricants are also taken into account. It is shown how the friction heat is divided at the tool-work interfaces. We conclude that the increased temperature is of great importance for tool wear.
