Towards the LHC Upgrade using the LHC well-characterized technology

This paper presents a new conceptual path towards the LHC Upgrade, which does not necessarily counts on the availability of new technologies (e.g. Nb3Sn inner triplet, crab-cavities). Based on a new optics concept, both to overcome the chromatic limits of the LHC ring and to perform the squeeze of the low-beta insertions themselves, the scheme proposed allows to obtain very small beta* (of the order of the bunch length) in the non-crossing plane and to reach peak luminosities up to 5.6E34 at ultimate intensity, nominal emittance and slightly reduced bunch length. Hence, this scheme already constitutes by itself a rather honorable solution for the LHC Upgrade but it offers as well a very solid basis for the success of any Upgrade project which would count on additional ingredients, such as more or less drastic modifications of the LHC beam parameters and/or the validation and implementation of crab-cavities into the machine.
