A Low-Cost, Portable Simulator for Skilled Performance Training

This paper describes a research study undertaken to examine the use of low-cost, portable devices in performance training. The study established the training requirements and system design specifications for a prototype M60A-1 tank gunnery trainer which exemplified the advantages of this approach. A “concept demonstrator” version of the trainer was constructed to test design alternatives and to show selected features of the eventual training device. The findings of this study show that recent advances in microcomputer and television can be used to develop effective, self-motivating part-task trainers that meet important user needs.
