Mass Spectrometry: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Introduction Historical Background Mass spectrometry (MS), an indispensable tool for structural and quantitative analyses, is used by many scientific disciplines in academic, government, and industrial laboratories. It had its origins in the early part of the 20th century, where it developed from studies on electrical discharges at low pressures. The forerunner of the modern mass spectrometer was built in 1911 by J. J. Thomson. Improved instruments were introduced in about 1920 by Aston and Dempster.
