Fractal Growth and Morphological Change in Bacterial Colony Formation

Pattern formation in biological systems is believed to be much more complicated than that in physical and/or chemical systems. Biological phenomena usually take place through complex intertwinement between inherently complex biological factors and environmental (physico-chemical) conditions. However, setting morphogenesis of individual organisms aside, pattern formation of the population of simple biological objects may sometimes be dominated by purely physical conditions. Let us here pay attention to the colony formation of bacteria which are one of the simplest biological objects.
