WIRELESS SUBSCRIBER LOCATION TRACKING FOR ADAPTIVE MOBILITY MANAGEMENT

OF THE THESIS Wireless Subscriber Location Tracking for Adaptive Mobility Management by Zhuyu Lei Thesis Director: Professor Christopher Rose Mobility Management is one of the key issues in wireless communications networks. To deliver an incoming call to a wireless subscriber, the system must keep track of the subscriber by locating the base station that covers the subscriber. As current wireless networks evolve toward personal communications systems (PCS), the fast-growing subscriber density stresses the limited wireless network resources available to support wireless services. Since subscriber location tracking requires a significant portion of the network resources, future wireless networks demand efficient location tracking algorithms that minimize the network resources consumption. In this thesis, we develop and study two new mobility management schemes, the Adaptive Location Area Tracking Scheme and the Probability Criterion Based Tracking Scheme. The design objective of both schemes is to minimize the combined average signaling cost of both paging and registration activities for each individual user. Both schemes can work adaptively to match the changing mobility and call characteristics of a user. We analyze these two schemes based on Brownian motion mobility and Poisson call arrival assumptions.
