Pseudo-color image fusion based on intensity-hue-saturation color space

This paper proposes a pseudo-color image fusion scheme for multi-sensor gray images, which is based on the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) color space. In the algorithm, registered gray input images are first fused by using a scheme on the basis of gradient-based wavelet structure. Then, the fused gray intensity value is considered as the intensity (I) component of the IHS transform. Hue (H) values are assigned so as to generate human-friendly colors. To emphasize noticeable regions in input images, saturation (S) values are assigned according to H values. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we compare it with a recently developed algorithm. Experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides more a human-friendly and clearer color image. We can also notice that our pseudo-color fused images can provide more visual information than the gray ones.
