OVERALL ENERGY AND MATERIAL BALANCES USING THE OUTOKUMPU-HSC AND THE LOTUS 123 PROGRAMS

The Outokumpu - HSC software is an interactive program which provides enthalpy and free energy data for a large number of chemical compounds of metallurgical interest. The LOTUS 123 program allows for matrix-algebra calculations to be carried out on an array of numbers entered on a spreadsheet. The capabilities of these two programs were combined and utilized to calculate the overall material and energy balances in a high temperature reactor where zinc calcine particles are reduced by carbonaceous material. This is a quick and convenient method for flowsheet development and for examining the effect of process parameters on the flowsheet.
