Shaping using variable-size regions

Constellation shaping is extended to provide shaping gains without resorting to high-dimensional constellations. This is accomplished by dividing the constellation into unequally sized constellations, and selecting these constellations on an equiprobable basis. A design example is provided, demonstrating the simplicity and power of the approach. >
