A convex lens is customarily used to implement the optical Fourier transformation. The lens serves two functions. One is to remove the approximating condition caused by a finite ob serving distance. The other is to generalize the transformation into a complex form, having real and imaginary components, so that the zero-frequency point is invariant to the position of the object a t the input plane.
