On Linking Social Structure and Personality

through which social arrangements influence personality and behavior. The psychological effects of community structure are traced through institutional patterns, ecological contexts, and face-to-face interaction. The range and diversity of potentially relevant influences place a heavy burden on the interpretive task; on the construction, measurement, and empirical assessment of linkages. The theme of this issue concerns approaches to linkage analysis, from studies of interpersonal environments to assessments of the psychological effects of institutional arrangements in society. To introduce this topic, I shall review general issues in the formulation of theoretical linkages, using hypothetical examples and the research literature, and shall examine some
