This paper describes the objectives, scope, and scheduled activities of CIGRE Task Force 38.02.20 Advanced Power System Controls Using intelligent Systems, which is co-chaired by the authors. The objective of promoting a panel session on the task force subject is two-fold: (a) to promote a more effective CIGRE-IEEE/PES Liaison on this subject; (b) to encourage new members enrollment in the task force. The paper summarizes the contributions of the other panelist under the perspective of the task force scope. The task force is scheduled to complete its work on the spring of 2002 and the final results will be a Technical Brochure to be published by CIGRE Central Offices and a summary in EIectra. The power system controls discussed are: emergency control, generation scheduling, generation automatic control, intelligent systems, preventive security control, restorative control, and voltage control.
