Cognitive Modeling and Verbal Semantics

What this course is about • This advanced course deals with lexical semantics which we will approach from a software engineering point of view. • More precisely, we will be dealing with verbal meaning. • You will be introduced to a new way of representing verbal semantics, the Unified Eventity Representation (UER), a diagrammatic representational framework designed to encode verbal meaning. What we're going to do • We will ask ourselves what we can learn from computer science. −→ What does a third programming paradigm from computer science, namely object-orientation, have to do with semantics and conceptualization? • We will draw conclusions from our observations. −→ We will develop the UER as an adaption of the UML. • The presented Unified Eventity Representation is neither logical nor functional in nature. −→ We will look at a new paradigm within linguistic semantics.
