Radiological considerations of granuloma and stenosis at the site of tracheostomy.

Post-tracheostomy complications of granuloma formation and stenosis at the stomal site may result from a combination of trauma, infection, and inadequate humidification of the tracheal mucosa. Radiological evaluation usually reveals the nature and extent of these lesions. Lateral neck films made with the soft tissue radiographic technique are the most useful projection. Fluoroscopy demonstrates the physiological alterations during respiration. Proper radiological evaluation of post-tracheostomy complications is extremely important, since these abnormalities are amenable to surgical correction.
