The scientific development of biometrics over the last 40 years

Publisher Summary This chapter explores the past 40 years of development of biometrics from a U.S. perspective. Biometrics is defined as the automated recognition of living individuals, based on biological and behavioral traits. A quick overview of biometric history shows that much of what is consider to be “new” in biometrics was really considered decades ago. But even today, there is much left to be done. The most efficient route is to learn from history, focusing on the current efforts on what is yet unknown and not unknowingly rediscovering the developments of the past. It is much too early to speculate on what the first decade of the new millennium ultimately holds for biometrics. It seems clear, however, that the industry will continue to grow and that technical and human improvements to the systems will be made.
