Measurement of the performance of one part of the activity required to deliver a product or service is problematic. This is the case with determining the performance of an organisation with respect to maintenance. This paper presents some new conceptual models that assist in the determination of real maintenance performance. These models provide a means of developing performance standards relevant to the organisation. Demonstrating the tangible gap between the current performance and that performance which suits the business and its technology provides a focus for improvement.
