The Sino-Japanese terms are usually given without alternatives, as though they are the only equivalents of the Sanskrit terms they represent. It would be unrealistic, of course, in a book of this kind to hope for any identification of terms according to Chinese translators, or at least some indication of which are early and which late. Even the standard references do not do this adequately, but it is an area where considerable work still needs to be done, and future makers of dictionaries should attempt to come to grips with it. Meanwhile, in spite of the limitations cited above, all persons involved in the study of East Asian Buddhism, especially of its Japanese forms, will find this book extremely helpful. A large debt of gratitude is owed to the editors for their painstaking labor of nearly eight years in preparing it.
