Development of a phoswich detector to detect neutrons and charged particles for space application

We have developed a new phoswich detector consisting of an NE213 liquid scintillators surrounded by a NE115 plastic scintillators on order to measure high energy neutron spectra accurately in the charged-particles mixed field, such as in the space. difference in the decay time constant of light output from the scintillators make this detector possible to separate charge-particle-induced and neutron-induced pulsed generated. Experiments were carried out at the RIKEN and at the NIRS cyclotrons. This detector was found to be able to discriminate neutron and gamma-ray event from external-proton events.
