Antitumor activity of ropy sour milks in murine solid tumor.

The antitumor effects of lyophilized preparations of three kinds of ropy sour milks, viili, langfil and ropy yoghurt were evaluated in the murine solid tumor system of Sarcoma-180. Intraperitoneal daily injection of the preparations for 9 days after tumor inoculation significantly inhibited tumor growth. Maximum antitumor effect was induced by a dose of 10mg/kg in the viili preparation and 50mg/kg in the langfil preparation. The antitumor activities of the ropy sour milks were completely abrogated by a single pre-treatment of carrageenan. In delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) response to oxazolone, the depressed DCH in tumor-bearing mice was significantly enhanced by the injection of three kinds of ropy sour milk. The effective dosage to enhance DCH was almost consistent with that which inhibited tumor growth. These results suggest that the antitumor effect of ropy sour milks may be mediated by the immune responses associated with macrophages and/or T cells. Jpn. J. Zootech. Sci., 61 (11): 1033-1039, 1990
