Leakage model and failure factors analysis of mechanical seals

Mechanical seals are used to prevent leakage of hydraulic fluid in the seal cavity, and in the meantime prevent entry of external contaminants. It is widely used in hydraulic pumps, hydraulic motors and other rotating hydraulic devices. And therefore there are many different designs for mechanical seals to meet specific applications. Due to its superior performance, mechanical seals have been widely applied in aircraft hydraulic systems. This paper focuses on the research of that how the adverse airborne environment as high speed acts on the mechanical seal performance. By understanding the various failure modes or symptoms of mechanical seals, the sealing mechanism and failure mechanism are analyzed in this paper. This helps in taking appropriate steps to increase the life and improve the reliability of the mechanical seals.
