Application of Waste Materials in Croatian Road Construction Practice

In the last few years the growth of road construction in Republic of Croatia has been very intensive. The reasons for that are the reconstruction and modernization of existing road network as well as heavier inclusion in the European networks. But, intensive road construction increases the needs for natural materials which have been traditionally used in Croatian road construction practice. Even though Croatia is one of the countries with lots of technical stone deposits, intensive exploitation can lead to a great devastation of natural wealth and exhaustion of natural stocks. To ensure sustainable growth, i.e. to provide beneficial use of waste materials and industrial by-products, the reduction of quantities of these materials is trying to be accomplished in Croatia and world wide. Another reason for exploring the possibilities of their usage is that it promotes the preservation of nonrenewable natural materials. In this paper the waste materials and possibilities of their usage in Croatian road construction practice are described.
