Capacity Improvement in Dispersive, Non-Linear Optical Fiber

Shannon channel capacity is analysed thoroughly for different kinds of fiber, considering their nonlinearities. The possibilities of improving the spectral efficiency (and hence the capacity) of the non-linear fiber optic channel are studied. The Shannon capacity equation is differentiated with respect to the dispersion and set equal to zero for finding the optimum value of the dispersion which will maximize the channel capacity. Also with the optical phase conjugation, the analysis is made to find the optimum value of the bandwidth of the phase conjugator. The maximum capacity occurs, when the bandwidth of the phase conjugator is at its optimum value.
