The synthesis of bipedal locomotion.

Abstract This paper presents a mathematical model for the synthesis and control of bipedal walkers. The model deals with the three-dimensional motion of a symmetrical rigid body with massless extensible legs. Body trajectories and controls are synthesized for optimum stability and energy expenditure. The model provides a rigid body idealization of human locomotion and a rational tool for design of prosthetic devices and walking machines.
