Dermatosis in talapoin monkeys (Miopithecus talapoin) with response to zinc and animal protein

ZINC is an important micronutrient of animals and man. Zinc deficiency causes growth retardation, dermatoses, reproductive failure, congenital malformations, impaired immunity and exocrine pancreatic function, and reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (Swenerton and Hurley 1980, Issoual and others 1991, Prasad 1991, Kim and others 1998). There are few reports of zinc deficiency in primates (Macapinlac and others 1967, Chadwick and others 1979, Swenerton and Hurley 1980). This short communication describes the clinicopathological findings and zinc status of two privately owned talapoin monkeys (Miopithecus talapoin) with dermatoses. A young-adult male talapoin (case 1) was presented with chronic dermatosis. Its diet consisted mostly of cheese-like
