Modeling Pilot Behavior for In-Trail Following

This paper describes the development of a model to simulate the behavior of pilots during an in-trial following task. Twenty airline pilots participated in an experiment developed to test current interfaces and procedures related to distance-based in-trail following. Based on the measured data, a pilot model has been developed with the objective to make the driving factors of the behavior of the pilot more comprehensible and to use these models during fast-time simulations. The first models discussed in this paper were based on Fuzzy logic but the comparison with the results of a Proportional-Derivative controller (PD-controller) showed marginal improvement. A second model, based on a Regression Tree was able to predict the speed control of the pilot in an accurate manner and resulted in a substantial improvement compared to the speed control predicted by the PD-controller.
